The Architecture has been Given a New Civic Life

Raleigh Union Station - Raleigh, NC
Clearscapes

Raleigh Union Station synthesizes a celebration of rich local industrial heritage, the spirit of railroad travel, and the activation of an isolated property in downtown Raleigh. It embodies the success of a decade-long partnership between the Federal Railroad Administration, the NC Department of Transportation, the City of Raleigh and the five private railroad companies. Erected in the Depot National Historic District, the mid-century “Viaduct Building” has been given a new civic life. Coupled with LEED-Silver status, it has a sustainable business plan that makes it the most economically viable station nationally, ensuring its long-term resilience and place-making potential.

The Trott Residence - Durham, NC
Tina Govan Architect and ThoughtCraft Architects

With a view of the Durham skyline, this home sits in the historic Cleveland- Holloway neighborhood. Our goal was to “sing the song sung by the street,” but with a modern sensibility. A wraparound porch continues the existing pattern of front porches, extending inside to outside through foldaway glass walls. Mediating between the public street and private courtyard, it spills out in both directions. Wood slats weave siding, railings, fences, and trellises together creating dynamic patterns of light and shadow. House and site are designed as one, weaving together inside and outside, building and nature, old and new.

601 Massachusetts Avenue - Washington D.C.
Duda|Paine Architects

This design for a full block in downtown DC was influenced by the city’s L’Enfant masterplan and the site’s unique geometry. Oblique intersections contribute to an eye-level urban experience while corner spaces and roof terraces offer views back to the city. The program conforms to the triangular site by means of a dual-core L-shaped layout. The resulting void led to an atrium that allows sunlight to penetrate the deep footprint while also marking the entry along Mass Ave. Inside the lobby, the undulating wood ceiling, travertine walls, and soft forms of the sculptures merge to contrast with the sharp exterior.

Church On Morgan - Raleigh, NC
In Situ Studio

Edenton Street UMC asked us to help them find a location for a new church community. We identified a historic complex of buildings on Blount and Morgan - a mash-up of four buildings, built between 1905 and 1986 and wearing Post-Modern garb. The existing complex was a maze of hallways, offices, and inaccessible spaces. A corner garden was hidden from view and neglected. We created a sanctuary in the old warehouse building, made an entry through the garden, and traced an accessible route throughout the complex. The buildings now accommodate weekly community events and seven hundred people at Sunday worship.

Penland Northlight - Penland, NC
Louis Cherry Architecture

The Penland School of Crafts, located in the mountains of North Carolina, is one of the foremost craft schools in the US, with 400 acres and 51 buildings. The Northlight Building is the centerpiece of the campus, housing the studios for papermaking and photography as well as the social hall where most school gatherings and events occur. The front porch for the school is framed with expressive wood and metal details and overlooks the meadows and mountains beyond. The Northlight Building is expressive of the dedication to craft at the Penland School of Crafts.

Durham Studio At Legacy Tower - Durham, NC
Perkins+Will

The Durham Studio is a 12,000sf renovation, relocating an architecture office from a suburban office park to downtown Durham, NC. The 54-person design firm leased the entire 2nd floor of this 1965 office building, completely gutting and repositioning it to provide a fresh, new studio environment. The design emphasizes open views, day-lit interiors, team centered work environments and flexibility. The design aesthetic is a nod to the building’s mid-century heritage while embracing 21c ideas for collaboration and a healthy work environment. This is the first project in North Carolina to be Fitwel-certified.

Edentwin - Raleigh, NC
The Raleigh Architecture Company

Edentwin consist of two adjacent single-family houses perched above Edenton Street; a three-lane one-way thoroughfare that connects residential neighborhoods to the east with downtown Raleigh. The site plan is organized around a shared central courtyard that visually and spatially connects the houses and families to one another. Small buildable areas and tight zoning restrictions influence the compact linear footprints and projecting forms. Front porches, shaded by the cantilevered second floor, link the homes to the community and reinforce the existing vernacular and street front edge. Conceived of as fraternal twins, the homes share common traits but retain their own identities.

Pettigrew State Park Visitor Center - Creswell, NC
Evoke Studio Architecture

Pettigrew State Park Visitor’s Center is situated next to the majestic Lake Phelps. This 6,500 sf visitor center welcomes visitors who visit the park for leisure or to delve into the rich history of the area such as the 44,000-year- old dugout canoes of the Algonquian peoples or the former Somerset Plantation grounds. Rather than recreate the past, the new visitor center transforms cues from the surrounding context into a strikingly modern design. The building is conceived of as a large porch a traditional Southern staple that provides shelter, encourages relaxation and welcomes visitors.
